A ride to Acrocorinth and Isthmia.

Summer is over but the weather is still warm, so I want to share with you a recent week-end spent participating in a yoga seminar at Isthmia and Acrocorinth. Great stay, splashes in the Saronic Gulf, good food. When we returned, I had the impression that I had gone somewhere very far away, to an exotic place.

Acrocorinth. Years and years of driving on the national road and admiring the imposing castle standing on the rock and always wondering when I would find time to visit it.

The Hotel Kalamaki Beach at Isthmia was a pleasant surprise: great location, amazing beach and beautiful sea right at your feet – that’s the advantage of old Greek hotels – spacious guest lounges, large renovated rooms that overlook the sea and–most important–warm hospitality from the hosts, who love their work. This affordable hotel is open all year. [Upon my return home I discovered that it was built in 1972, and is the work of the noted architect, Kostas Voutsinas, who, among his many other achievements, reconstructed a wing of the Hotel Grande Bretagne (renovated in 2004 by the office 3SK Stylianidis, and in such a way that it lost none of it original charm).

The vast gardens where children chased each other until late at night, the beach with its wooden cabins and dinners with traditional dishes such as imam bayildi (eggplant stuffed with onion, garlic and tomatoes) and dolmades (stuffed vine leaves cooked in lemon sauce), served on white tablecloths, took me back to the hotels of my childhood.

The next morning on the terrace overlooking the sea, having enjoyed a bougatsa (pastry filling with semolina cream) and all the breakfast side-dishes, we visited the website of the Ministry of Culture to learn more about Acrocorinth which is 20 min away from the hotel.

On the way there, we talked about knights and princesses, and the incredible fortifications built in ancient times. Greece’s biggest castle, with its massive splendor, successfully resisted the Franks, the Knights Hospitallers, the Venetians, and the Ottoman Turks up until the founding of the Greek state.

The route is easy: From Athens, we took the highway towards Patra, and just after the fork for Tripoli, saw the sign for Ancient Corinth and Acrocorinth on the right. We turned there and followed the signs. With the monolithic rock that dominates the plain always in front of us, we passed by houses adorned with “ancient columns”, discovering beautiful vineyards further on, with the rock visible up ahead. We followed the winding road for 4 km, and suddenly the children exclaimed “Cows, cows!” We made a stop to admire the cows, and chatted with friendly Costas, the cow-herd, who told us that, with the food they were eating, the cows would double in size by afternoon!

Eventually we parked in the shadow of the castle. As we gazed up at it, 575 metres above us, we were filled with awe. The guard let us in without tickets. The steep cobbled path was slippery, so visitors should wear good shoes and hats, and bring water with them, as well as something to snack on during rest stops. 2-3 hours should be allowed for seeing the sights, though for really enjoying the place, a whole day is needed.

The first fortifications date back to the late 6th/early 7th century BC. Later, the Venetians rebuilt the walls and added three impressive gates. The area within the walls is large and with panoramic views from various vantage points. Each brick and stone, each ruin, dates back to a different era. The Temple of Aphrodite, water tanks, various churches, such as that of Saint Demetrios, a mosque here, a fountain there and a bit further on a bastion –discoveries are as endless as one’s zest for discovery.

The views from the largest castle of the Moria (the old name of the Peloponnese) is ONE-OF-A-KIND! One can’t get enough of them when sitting on the ramparts. The entire Corinthian land, with its port, Ancient Corinth, the temple of St. Paul, the port of Lechaio, the marina with dozens of caiques. The legendary city of Corinth, the largest port of the Greek Classical world, meeting-point for traders and travelers coming from East and West, was a lively town. If the reputation of Athens is linked with politics and intellectualism, that of Corinth is linked with hedonism and licentiousness.

A cross section from the east to the west separates the Peloponnese peninsula from the mainland. The canal of Corinth, the engineering marvel of 1893 that links the Corinthian Gulf with the Saronic Gulf, was a vision held since antiquity.

I went up to the “Temple of Aphrodite”, which is at the highest point of the castle. From here the view is breathtaking. One can marvel at the Corinthian and the Saronic Gulf, the plain of Argos, the mountains of Panachaikon, Ziria and Parnassus – I heard that one can even see the Acropolis of Athens if the air is very transparent.

When leaving, I recommend visitors to make a stop at the café outside the castle for a juice, and then visit the well-preserved archaeological site of Ancient Corinth (we missed it because on Sundays it closes at 15:00) and, of course, to admire the findings from the excavations in the museum. Ancient Corinth, together with Acrocorinth are wonderful for a daily excursion with kids, who will learn that castles do exist outside of fairytales and playmobiles, and these castles are only an hour ( 80 km) away!

Now it is well-known that a good walk sharpens the appetite, so the road led us to our old, familiar and most favourite tavern Kavos  close to Isthmia. Everything here is pure and authentic: people, fresh ingredients, flavors, landscape, all of these combined! The tables sit near the waves, between two tiny beaches ideal for swimming or fishing. The cooked fish seem almost alive, full of aroma and flavor, and with a perfect texture, almost reaching perfection, and the wild greens are also alive. The tomato salad from their garden is served with oregano, the olives are superb and the pasta with cannolicchios (razor shells) is divine and al dente. The owners have been in the restaurant business since 1964. Their son, Tassos (seen in the blue shirt in my photo, and also pictured in the old black-and- white photo taken by the multi-talented editor Evangelos Terzopoulos in 1973), despite his degree in agronomics, decided to continue the family tradition and run the tavern. His mother, Pagona, kindhearted and lively, found either in the kitchen or everywhere else around the place, is the true pillar of the establishment. Food, pleasant chatting, and the view of the cove with the emerald waters surrounded by pine trees, are the best things for people to enjoy at the end of a wonderful day.

Back at the hotel, Grandma Evangelia – who created the hotel with her husband Homer – always with a smile on her face, discreet but present–is ready to tell a joke, or to give wise advice. I asked her for her secret of success: “I love people and I love my job!” she answered, continuing with, “This is what I tried to pass on to my daughter and my grand-daughter.” Her daughter, Marilena Stathopoulou, a worthy successor, created an entire hospitality chain. It makes me so happy when the beautiful creations of the older generations find worthy successors to give future generations the opportunity to enjoy them.

Right next to the hotel, the tavern “O Kipos” (The garden), run by the Venetsanou family, offers simple, affordable and tasty food. Only a few dishes are offered, but all extremely fresh – grilled fish and meat, and one or two baked dishes. It is located at Kalamaki, right above the homonymous pebble beach–a beach like a painting. One mustn’t leave without buying corn bread from the bakery “Loutra tis Oraias Elenis” (Baths of Beautiful Helen) – found in the homonymous village, right next to the super market “Spark”. I thought it is the perfect souvenir of the trip! Don’t you agree?
