The unknown history of Gennata -“Agnelli” mansion in Kouloura, Corfu.

Corfiot lords and politicians, Italian dynasties and Sultans, boats, love, wars, disasters, fishing in the moonlight, gourmet delights with live lobsters, swimming endless hours in crystal clear waters, all this and more make up the story of the most idyllic bay of Corfu.

When I found myself a few days ago at the Bay of Kouloura (32km from Corfu town), on the northeastern coast of the island, where I’d gone to take pictures of the unspoilt landscape, I could only imagine the stories that this small part of earth must be hiding.

It was early morning on the terrace of the tavern, “Kouloura”, a century-old establishment– a morning of ultimate tranquility. While gazing at the olive trees next to the emerald waters of the bay, with the boats going in and out of the little harbor, I chatted with Yannis Ginargyros, the tavern’s owner. The early morning coffee led to small mezedes (hors d’oeuvres) with ouzo, and the casual chat led to an unexpected grandiose story when I asked about the history of the tavern. “The building that houses the tavern belongs to the estate”, he told me. “We rent it from the owners of the mansion,” he added, sipping his ouzo as a prelude to what turned out to be a long story.

Kouloura Mansion from the sea

Yiannis Ginargiros owner of Taverna Kouloura

“Once upon a time, the estate (villa Gennata/Nasi) comprised the white house by the seaside, the mansion, the church, the home of the staff,  the tavern, “Kerasia beach” on the north, “Kalami beach” to the south, and the hillside above them. It consisted of at least 300 acres. It was a true Corfiot nobile estate. The tavern belongs to the estate”, he continued . When I asked who lived in the mansion, he replied rather quietly, “Members of the Agnelli family.” I was surprised and impressed but understood that he didn’t want to say more about them.

I made a mental note of this, and upon my return to Athens started doing some research, and this is what I found: In the 1980s, Umberta Nasi and her husband Giorgio Ajmone-Marsan came to Corfu for vacations and fell in love with the island. They read in a London newspaper that the mansion at Kouloura was for sale, and bought it.Umberta Nasi comes from one of the most aristocratic and emblematic families of northern Italy. She is the first cousin of Gianni Agnelli, granddaughter of the founder of Fiat industry, Giovanni Agnelli (1866-1945), daughter of Caterina Agnelli-Nasi and Carlo Nasi. Umberta grew up as a princess and married Giorgio Ajmone -Marsan, who also comes from a noble family. Today, the house is enjoyed by their daughter, Giulia Marsan, and her British husband, Praveen Moman, and their children.

In 2007, Christie’s announced that the auction of the unique collection of Umberta Nasi and her husband Giorgio Marsan, which included works of art, pieces of furniture, various object d’ art from antiquity to modern times from their three residences: the palazzo Silvio Pellico in Moncalieri  in the hills of Turin, an apartment in the beautiful Cadogan Square in Knightsbridge, west London, and the Gennata/Nasi Mansion in Corfu. Among the items being auctioned was one of the most important works of Edward Lear, “View of the city from the hill of Gastouri, Corfu,” for 660,000 USD. Edward Lear first visited Corfu in 1848, used the island as his winter base until 1870, and painted some of his most famous landscapes. Umberta and her husband passed away few years ago. Today, their house is rented out by the week, and I believe this is a good way to maintain it. Here you can see the interiors of the Mansion

But lets’ begin the story from the beginning: The mansion and the wider area of Kouloura were initially owned by the Quartano* family, Corfiot nobles who may have come from Venice (their coat of arms was embroidered on the baldacchino of Saint Spyridon church in the old town of Corfu. The manor was built during the 15th century, right on the waterfront of the natural harbor– according to the architectural standards of the time, and is an excellent example of fortification architecture. At the entrance of the mansion is located a church, built in honor of St. Nicholas of Petra. The church dates from the 11th century and has its own beautiful story. It is said that on May 20, 1085, an Italian ship carrying the holy relic of Saint Nicholas back to Italy, passed through the strait between Albania and Corfu, where it encountered a storm and was forced to find shelter in the Bay of Kouloura. Hence, the church was built in thanks to the saint, and thus the Quartano family set foot in Kouloura.

Another interesting story about the Quartano family in Corfu tells of the abduction of the 7-year-old noble girl, Kali Quartano , by Hayreddin Barbarossa. The noble girl was given as a present to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Yorgos H. Sourtzinos, in his book Corfu, A Travel Through Time, writes: “Thanks to her beauty and rare intellect, she had a royal upbringing, and became the wife and consultant of Sultan Selim II (1524–1574) and mother of the Sultan Murad III (1546–1595). She was the well-known  (Ottoman Turkish: نور بانو سلطان‎; c.Haseki Afife Nûr-Banû Valide Sultan, 1525[3] – 7 December 1583), who safeguarded the Christian traditions to the extent which she was able to do so. When she died, she was buried next to Selim II in his mausoleum in the courtyard of Hagia Sophia, thus becoming the first wife of a Sultan to receive the honor of being laid to rest next to her spouse.

Gennata -Nasi Mansion, Kouloura

Meanwhile, while sipping the second glass of ouzo and tasting a mezes of crunchy fried shrimp, Yannis continued his narration: “When I was a boy, the little harbor of Kouloura was full of fishing boats. It was an important fishing village, with dozens of passenger boats as well as commercial boats that carried construction materials, including sand and stones, to build houses in the city of Corfu. In addition to that, huge barrels full of olive oil were loaded onto the boats for export. At that time there were no roads on the island, and all the transport of people and goods happened via the harbor. Back then the tavern served both as coffee house and grocery shop, where the fishermen stood and drank ouzo (which was weighed by the tonne–one tonne equal to 1,000 kilograms) with whitebait, octopus, squid, tomato and olives on the side; often the fishermen got merry and started singing. In 1958, my parents-in-law, Stamatina and Vangelis, started running the tavern – before them an uncle of my father was in charge, and before him my grand grandfather. The tavern has its own great story!”  I asked him about his childhood. “I was born in 1948. As a child I spent whole days at sea, fishing and then grilling octopuses on the beach with the other village children. We picked fruit from the trees and fished….

“I went to high school in town, and when I was sixteen years old I embarked as a steward for a decade, from 1965 to 1975, on a ship that cruised the Mediterranean Sea. I came here as a groom in 1975, when I married Barbara. In the 1970s, tourism began– first with the Italians and English, later, when the Club Med opened, the French.

“From the hands of the Quartano family, the estate with all its possessions and the olive groves, passed to a branch of the Gennatas family from Kefalonia”, Yannis continued.  “The Gennatas family originated from Constantinople. In 1498, after the fall of the castles of Methoni and Koroni to the Ottoman Turks, the family emmigrated to Kefalonia. During the 18th century, a part of the Gennatas family emmigrated to Corfu. Many members of the Gennatas family became prominent members of Corfiot and Greek society. Ioannis Gennatas, born in that very mansion in 1777, studied law at Padova, and practiced law next to the distinguished lawyer Joanne Vizzini. He returned to the newly-founded state of Greece in 1828, where its governor, Count Ioannis Kapodistrias, invited him to take part in the committee for the foundation of the Greek law. One year later, he was appointed Minister of Justice. In 1833, he was elected as member of the parliament and Public Prosecutor General in the state of Ionian Islands. In his honor, a narrow cobbled street that leads to Spianáda (Esplanade) in the Old Town of Corfu, was given his name.

“When I was boy, around 1948-1953, my mother and my godmother often sat on the opposite hill listening to Aunt-Geli playing the piano. Aunt-Geli was Angelina Gennata. When her husband passed away, the estate and everything that was inside the house, huge library with hundreds of papyruses, manuscripts, old books, important historical documents, along with period furniture, artworks, paintings, family portraits was inherited by their four nieces and nephews from Kefalonia. One of the nieces, Vana, was married to an Englishman named Von Hughes. The mansion and the remaining estate (the heirs sold pieces of the land from time time) passed to their son, Disney Von Hughes. He sold the house to the couple Nasi-Marsan after a while he returned in Britain where he passed away  at a retirement home in England.”

As I gaze on the serene bay before my eyes I recall the words of Lawrence Durrell from the book, Prospero’s Cell, “The little bay lies in a trance, drugged with its own extraordinary perfection … look down into three fathoms of water with neither rock nor weed to interrupt the play of imagination.” This is exactly what I see. Lawrence and Nancy Durrell spend four years on Corfu (1935-1939), in a fisherman’s cottage called the White House, in the neighboring bay of Kalami. It’s the white house with a tavern on the ground floor that is depicted in the photo.

Something very important that has never been written is that Darrell’s decided to stay in Corfu thanks to Mrs. Gennata. In 1936 a friend of Lawrence, Theodore Stephanides took him and his wife Nancy to have tea with the lady of the mansion and it was this visit that made them immediately decide to live in this part of the island and escape the rest of the family. What was memorable to them about the neighbour Mrs Gennatas was that she spoke excellent English with a strong Liverpulian accent!

In 2016, a TV series based on Gerald Durrell’s autobiographical books aired, with tremendous success in Britain and which brought Corfu into the spotlight. The shooting continues on location. Don’t miss to dropping anchor and having a swim in the tiny bay that hosts a little stone shrine of St Arsenios, just south of kalami bay. In my Family and Other Animals, it’s where Lawrence, Nancy and their bohemian friends swam naked.

Στο My Family and Other Animals είναι εκεί όπου ο Lawrence, η Nancy και οι φίλοι του μποέμικου ζευγαριού κολυμπούν γυμνοί.

Since I grew up in Corfu, I wanted to learn the story of the Kouloura mansion that is embraced by the emerald waters of the sea. It seemed that no one in Corfu knew its history. I do hope that its new owners will always honor it and that the Corfiots will protect Gennata/Quartano Mansion, as it is part of their history, our history.

*The Quartanos family is an old aristocratic family of Corfu that probably originated in Venice. They became Orthodox Christians, acquired titles and estates, and among the family members were many eminent Corfiots who reached the highest offices of the island and even became representatives of Corfu in Serenissima/Venice.
